No! Despite the growing number of studies linking Elmiron use to potentially permanent vision damage, its manufacturer, Janssen, continues to distribute the drug. And it had failed to issue any communication about the danger of taking the drug.

The company only began adding a pigmentary macular degeneration warning to the label after June 2020.

Studies Show The Shocking Connection Between Elmiron and Vision Problems

The studies below show a striking number of patients who have taken Elmiron develop impaired vision symptoms.

Emory Eye Center study - May 2018 - Six patients with chronic exposure to Elmiron developed unique pigmentary macular degeneration.
Emory Eye Center study - April 2019 - 10 patients with a history of IC that didn’t take Elmiron did not have pigmentary macular degeneration.
Kaiser Permanente study - October 2019 - 22 of 91 of Elmiron users showed retinal toxicity. Those who took more of the drug had increased levels of toxicity.
Jain study - November 2019 - People who used Elmiron for 7 years showed significantly increased odds of contracting macular disease compared to those who took the drug for 5 years.
Huckfeldt and Vavvas study - November 2019 - A patient’s pigmentary macular degeneration continued to get worse six years after stopping Elmiron.
Vora, Patel and Melles study - January 2020- 27 out of 117 patients who took Elmiron experienced pigmentary macular degeneration. Those who took over 1,500 grams showed higher risk.
Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology study - April 2022 - This study found that pigmentary macular degeneration is commonly misdiagnosed as other eye problems.
